An overview of the field of Child Development/Early Childhood Education, including the history, current trends, legal issues and career options. Emphasis will be placed on methods of observation, recording and interpreting child behaviors. Total of 54 hours lecture.

A comprehensive overview of concepts, issues and theories of human development from conception through adolescence. Emphasis is on physical, cognitive and psychosocial development that occurs through stages of growth. Outside observations required. Total of 54 hours lecture.

A survey of the field of Early Childhood Studies with reference to the importance and responsibilities of the preschool environment. Includes directed observation of a variety of community Early Childhood programs. Observation required. Total of 54 hours lecture.

EAR-24 - Creative Activities Through Curriculum (formerly Creative Activities for Young Children)

Introduction to creativity as it relates to young children in education. Integration of creative activity into various aspects of the early childhood curriculum, including art, music, movement, dramatics, language, play, food and media. Total of 54 hours lecture.

EAR-26 - Child Health

A study of health, safety, and nutrition factors of importance to the teacher, child, and family of the young child. Topics included are common childhood diseases, general physical and mental health, first aid and emergency procedures, as well as health protection provided by the home, school, and the local community. Total of 54 hours lecture.

EAR-28 - Principles and Practices of Early Childhood Education

Prerequisite: EAR-22.
Application of child growth and development principles to early childhood curricula; study of appropriate play and learning experiences; use of materials and equipment; techniques of planning; administration and organization of staff, interpersonal relationships; finances and advisory boards, recordkeeping, guidance techniques; discipline and group control; development and evaluation of curriculum. Total of 54 hours lecture.

EAR-30 - Internship in Early Childhood Education

Prerequisite: EAR-22 and 28 or concurrent enrollment in EAR-28.
Supervised experience and participation in a group program for preschool children at the RCC Child Development Center or community child development centers. Emphasis on curriculum planning and evaluation; discipline and guidance techniques; instructional methods; cooperative relationships with staff, parents, and children; and professional ethics and job search skills. Total of 36 hours lecture and 108 hours laboratory.

EAR-33 - Caring for Infants and Toddlers in Group Settings

Prerequisite: None. EAR-20 recommended.
This course is intended to provide care givers in family day care homes or infant-toddler centers the components of quality care and education for children ages 0-3. The specific development of the child from prenatal to age three will be studied in relation to the development of appropriate activities and materials to meet the child's development needs. Health, safety and nutrition as well as the components of physical space, equipment and play of the young child will be examined. Total of 54 hours lecture.

EAR-34 - Curriculum Activities for Infants and Toddlers

An introduction to organizing and developing activities for infants and toddlers. Practical learning experiences will be developed in various curriculum areas such as science, learning games, arts and crafts, imaginative play, music and movement, language, self-concept and discipline. Total of 54 hours lecture.

EAR-37 - School Age Child Care

Prerequisite: None. EAR-20 recommended.
This course provides school-age child care givers with methods and activities appropriate for after school care of 5-11 year olds. Emphasis will be placed on differentiating between the needs of the school-aged child after school as opposed to during school. Planning will include methods for integrating the school-aged child's interests and abilities into a developmentally appropriate curriculum to meet individual needs. Total of 54 hours lecture.

EAR-38 - Adult Supervision in ECE/CD Classrooms

Prerequisite: None. Recommended: EAR-20, 22, 24, 42, 44, and 45.
This course is a study of the methods and principles of supervising student teachers, assistant teachers, parents and volunteers in early childhood/child development classrooms. Emphasis is on the role of classroom teachers who function as mentors to new teachers while simultaneously addressing the needs of children, parents and other staff. Meets the requirements for the Child Development Permit Option 1 for the Master Teacher, Site Supervisor and Program Director level. Total of 36 hours lecture.

EAR-40 - Introduction to Children with Special Needs

The course is designed to introduce the student to the broad areas of exceptionality (i.e. mental retardation, visual impairment, communicatively handicapped) and for the student to develop a working knowledge of each of these areas. The students will observe programs to further their knowledge of approaches and techniques utilized to facilitate growth with exceptional individuals. Total of 54 hours lecture.

EAR-41 - Working with Children with Special Needs

A supervised practicum as a special education aide. Designed to provide training in working with developmentally delayed children. Total of 18 hours lecture and 108 hours laboratory.

EAR-42 - Home, School and Community Relations

Prerequisite: None.
Designed for parents, teachers, teacher-aides, and others interested in or participating in parent education. Broad overview of child development, prenatal through early childhood periods. Communication and interaction within the family and school for young children. Total of 54 hours lecture.

EAR-44 - Administration of Early Childhood Education I

Prerequisite: None. Nine units in nursery school courses recommended.
The study of organizational theory and management functions, principles, and techniques applied to early childhood education programs. This includes budgeting, personnel, curriculum development, regulatory agencies, recordkeeping and public relations. Total of 54 hours lecture.

EAR-45 - Administration of Early Childhood Education II

Prerequisite: EAR-44. Twelve units of early childhood studies recommended.
Examines the dynamics of management behavior and the communication process within the organization. Includes motivation, goal setting, personnel management, conflict management, problem solving, decision making and organizational change as they relate to early childhood education programs. Practical experience is attained in verbal and nonverbal communication and interpersonal communication. Includes proposal writing, report writing and letter writing appropriate to early childhood directors and program administrators. Total of 54 hours lecture.

EAR-48 - Parent Participation and Involvement

Prerequisite: None. Recommended class for EAR parents, but not limited to EAR parents.
Designed for parents and interested adults wishing to enhance their parenting skills, increase their understanding of the preschool child, and increase their skills in aiding in the campus Child Development Center while actively participating in the functioning of the center. Total of 27 hours lecture and 27 hours laboratory.

EAR-49 - Early Childhood Studies Work Experience

Prerequisite: EAR-28.
Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 7 units including the work experience units and in a major related to the course. This class is designed to coordinate the student's on-the-job training with the related occupational classroom instruction. Subsequent enrollment in additional semesters will provide the student an opportunity for additional skill and competency development in the subject matter. Total of 18 hours lecture/ discussion is required in the first semester and may be required in subsequent semesters. In addition students are required to complete 60 hours of volunteer work or 75 hours of paid service per unit, per semester. May be repeated three times.

It will also attempt to relate how changes in society and forces impacting on this change influence child-rearing.
