Institutional Research Definitions
The following definitions are used internally at Riverside Community College District to ease communication about information. When possible, these reflect common definitions which have been established by the RP Group so that meaning is added to data analyzed consistently over time, in relation to appropriate comparison groups used by CA community college researchers.
Course Enrollment:
Student is enrolled in course and receives a valid grade notation at the time the college MIS data tape is submitted to the State Chancellor's Office.
Course Retention (Course Completion): Student is retained in the course to end of term.
Numerator: Number of enrollments with grade of A,B,C,D,F,CR,NC,I,P,NP
Denominator: Number of enrollments with grade of A,B,C,D,F,CR,NC,W,I,P,NP,DR
Retention Rate: Percent of students retained in courses out of total enrolled in courses.
The success rate is calculated by dividing the numerator by the denominator and multiplying by 100.
Course Success (Successful Course Completion): Student succeeds in the course. A,B,C,CR,P grade notations.
Numerator: Number of enrollments with grade of A,B,C,CR,P
Denominator: Number of enrollments with grade of A,B,C,D,F,CR,NC,W,I,P,NP,DR
Success Rate: Percent of students successful in courses out of total enrolled in courses.
The success rate is calculated by dividing the numerator by the denominator and multiplying by 100
Term to Term Persistence: Student persists from one term to the next term (Approved June 1996)
First Term: Student is enrolled in at least one course. A,B,C,D,F,CR,NC,W,I,P,NP,DR grade notations
Next Term: Student is enrolled in at least one course. A,B,C,D,F,CR,NC,W,I,P,NP,DR grade notations
Persistence Rate: Percent of students enrolled in next term out of students enrolled in first term. The persistence rate is calculated by dividing the numerator by the denominator and multiplying by 100
Numerator: Number of students with at least one course with A,B,C,D,F,CR,NC,W,I,P,NP,DR in the next term (x 100)
Denominator: Number of students with at least one course with A,B,C,D,F,CR,NC,W,I,P,NP,DR in the first term
Transfer Preparedness
RCCD Transfer Committee defined two definitions of Transfer Prepared in 2005:
Transfer Prepared1 (Adapted from Partnership for Excellence definition): First-time students who successfully complete a transfer-level English course and successfully complete a transfer-level math course and complete 60 or more transferable units within 6 years.
Transfer Prepared2 (adapted from California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office definition of transfer): First-time students who attempt a transfer-level math course or a transfer-level English course and complete 12 or more units within 6 years.
Transfer Directed: First-time students who successfully complete a transferable mathematics course and a transferable English course within 6 years.
Transfer Ready: The number of students in the “Transfer Directed” cohort who complete 56 or more transferable units with a GPA or 2.0 or higher within 6 years.
