A study of life as revealed in plants and animals using cellular, organismal, and ecological approaches. The basic principles of cellular biology, morphology, biochemistry, physiology, taxonomy and the social implications of biology are included. Total of 54 hours lecture and 54 hours laboratory.
BIOL 2A - General Zoology 1, Invertebrates, (5 units)

A study of higher animals emphasizing the classification, evolution, and comparative structure of vertebrates, human histology and systems and embryology and genetics. BIOL 4 - Gardening (3 units)

A lecture course on the principles of gardening, designed to acquaint the student with various techniques and principles related to growing plants. Consideration will be given to outdoor gardening, growing house plants, propagation, soils, composting, irrigation, fertilization, pruning, pests, disease and plant selection. Introduction to the plant science, with principal emphasis on the structures, functions, and ecology of common members of each of the major plant divisions. BIO7 - Marine Biology (4 units)

An ecological study of the marine environment. Additional emphasis will be placed on the local marine plants and animals, and their interactions with the physical environment. Frequent field trips are combined with laboratory observations to acquaint the student with identification and understanding of the common marine organisms of the Southern California coastline. Ecology is a study of applied concepts such as basic concepts in population and community ecology, environmental issues, and conservation of natural resources. We are at a critical point in the history of the planet with respect to the growing human population and dwindling world's resources, and the time will be spent considering solutions and alternatives to global environmental problems. Total of 54 hours lecture.
BIOL 8L - Ecology Lab (1 unit)

Prerequisite: None. Concurrent or previous enrollment in BIOL 8 recommended.
The ecology lab covers various concepts of basic concepts in population and community ecology such as natural selection, resource partitioning, competition and island biogeography, as well as environmental issues. Study of these subjects will be accomplished by field and laboratory studies and subsequent data analysis and reports, as well as oral presentations and debates. Total of 54 hours laboratory.
BIOL 10 - Principles of Life Science (3 units)

An introduction to the principles of life sciences through the study of basic biological concepts of living organisms involving structure, behavior, evolutionary relationships and the social and environmental implications of life science. BIOL 11 - Introduction to Molecular and Cellular Biology (Majors) (5 units)

An intensive course for all Life Science majors designed to prepare the student for upper division courses in molecular biology, cell biology, and genetics. Course material includes introduction, principles of biochemistry, cells, genetics, and diversity. Total of 72 hours lecture and 54 hours laboratory.
BIOL 12 - Introduction to Organismal and Population Biology (Majors) (5 units)

Prerequisite: High school biology or BIOL 1. High school chemistry and algebra or equivilent recommended.
An intensive course designed for all Life Science majors to prepare the students for upper division courses in organismal and population biology. Course materials include plant structure and function, animal systems and behavior, ecological diversity and dynamics, and evolutionary theory including population genetics. Some field trips are required. Total of 72 hours lecture and 54 hours laboratory.
BIOL 30 - Human Reproduction and Sexual Behavior (3 units)

Human anatomy, physiology, and behavior as related to sexual reproduction, including discussion of fertilization, pregnancy, childbirth, and birth control. Consideration also will be given to homosexuality, venereal disease, sex education, sexual intercourse and response. Total of 54 hours lecture.

This course is designed to have students use the interactive system for various problems and testing in General Biology. Students will be provided with the opportunity to learn biology and improve their skills in using the computer and the laser disk. Total of 27 hours laboratory.
