The Award Winning Model United Nations Team
The RCC Model United Nations Team
participates nationally at several conferences including the American
Model United Nations (AMUN) conference in Chicago and the National
Model United Nations (NMUN) conference in New York City, as well as
regionally at conferences such as the Inland Empire Conference –
Model United Nations (IECMUN). Sometimes we attend a foreign
conference. The goal of the MUN experience is to provide college
students from around the world with an opportunity to achieve a better
understanding of the dynamics of multilateral diplomacy. An MUN
conference is a simulation of the real United Nations where each school
represents a foreign country or non-governmental organization (NGO).
Students must learn about their country, world events, as well as the
operations of the United Nations itself. The United Nations is split
into different committees and sub-committees. Each of these committees
attempts to tackle the difficult problems of the world today. A wide
variety of issues are discussed in the conference including nuclear
disarmament, human rights, intellectual and technological property
rights, and economic issues such as regional free trade zones.
These conferences provide an amazing
learning experience. The Chicago conference is memorable for reasons
such as, attending the largest conference in fall with 1,500 students,
as well as an opportunity to take in the unique Chicago atmosphere.
Chicago is also a priceless tool in RCC’s preparation for New
York. The New York conference is a one-of-a-kind experience; the final
day is held in the actual General Assembly Plenary Room in the United
Nations building. More than 3,500 delegates from across the nation and
around the world attend. During the conference, students will have a
chance to meet with their nation’s Permanent Missions to the
U.N., allowing students to gain insight into their country’s
policies and the dynamics of international diplomacy. Furthermore,
expert speakers are invited to speak before each committee on topics
being discussed in the United Nations.
Lastly, Students interested in furthering their pursuit of a higher education at an esteemed university such as, UCLA & UC Berkeley will find the MUN experience to be a valuable tool. The MUN organization is well respected and highly recognized nationally by major colleges and universities and may greatly benefit students when applying to such institutions. RCC students also carry the responsibility of organizing and hosting their own conference (IECMUN), which has proven to be a great asset to RCC MUN, as well as other local MUN organizations taking part in the conference.
